I was grading papers yesterday when I about fell out of my chair. Not because the chair was wobbly (although it is), but because of what a student had written. I'll paraphrase since I no longer have the paper in my possession:
Note to Professor Blair [side note: how cool does that sound?!]: I don't think I understood the assignment very well, so I'm not sure if my paper is what you wanted or not. I hope I don't get many points docked for this.
I'll give you a few moments to digest that.
Ok. Let's discuss. WTH?! Who turns a paper in with this disclaimer? What gives people the idea that this behavior is acceptable? Why not email me if you're confused? Do you think when you present a botched business plan to your boss that he'll still give you a pat on the shoulder and a raise to boot, just as long as you "qualify" the quality of the work?
Good Lord. This might be a long semester.
