Memory Lane

On this most recent trip home, Kim and I had a girls' night, during which we stayed up late eating ice cream, talking about boys, and watching chick flicks. The next morning we woke up and took a walk around her neighborhood, which happens to be the same one I grew up in...

This is the view of my old backyard...we planted the pine tree growing at the bottom of the hill and I used to decorate it every Christmas. Mami and Papi, our two geese, also called this pond home.

This is our old cabin...Ben and I had our first kiss right about where this truck is now parked. It was over Christmas break, 1998.

Another view...we planted some gardens in front of the house and around the well, and Dad used to have it jerry-rigged with electrical wire to keep the dogs out. He had a lot of projects that involved electricity...it's probably a good thing they live in the RV now. I used to mow the front lawn on a riding mower in my bikini, listening to my walkman. Yes. I was THAT cool. The yard looks pitiful now...I know, Dad. It's a cryin' shame. Kim and I were trying to remember which tree we buried our time capsule under, but couldn't agree on the same one.

There used to be a real-live Tee Pee here. I can remember one party I had when we pitched a tent in this spot and a gaggle of girls spent the night...well, we spent a few hours there, anyway. Soon we had spooked ourselves so bad with ghost stories that, when someone claimed to have heard growling outside, we all took off for the house and spent the rest of the night in my bedroom.

Part of my old running route. It's amazing I didn't twist or break anything!

The cave that I used to escape to for my quiet times, to read, or to write short-stories that always ended with me dancing to some Righteous Brother's song with my crush of the week.

The lake on the other side of the dam from our house. The dock on the right hand side is where we used to swim. We were always vigilant for snapping turtles and snakes - who knew it would be a carp that would end up chasing us?! Good times, good times.
And, finally, the waterfall at the end of the lake. This was one of my favorite spots. I think it still is.

What wonderful hidden treasures! And it's so much fun to visit 'old homes!' I visited my 'old home' in SoCal a few years ago. Instead of the beautiful grey house with white trim, it is now a raunchy celery green. And the trees are gone. And instead of a swingset, there's a pool. At least I have my great memories!!!

Ooh I LOVE this post!! This brought back so many good memories. So many funny junior high parties when we all thought the world revolved around us. :) Those were the days...

I remember losing a shoe in your pond... and canoeing when it was high water... slumber parties in your loft... walking around the neighborhood with your dogs... swimming in the snapping turtle lake on summer breaks (I remember being scared to be in the water by myself). The teepee night was awesome! I remember running FULL SPEED back to your house because I got so spooked. Who knows who i left in the dust behind me!! All I knew was that I didn't want to get eaten by whatever was growling!! Boy, I was just one big weenie, huh

Some things I DIDN'T know about you: getting your groove on to the Righteous Brothers :) AND mowing the lawn in your bikini- that just makes me laugh out loud! :)

Thanks for the fun memories!
